Not familiar with this engine. It takes anywhere from 15-25 pulls on the starter rope to get going but from then on it starts on the first pull the rest of the day.
Typical problems include hard starting rough running a need to adjust the carburetor during use to keep the engine from stalling a need to rev the engine to keep it from dying and not starting at all.
2 stroke engine hard to pull start. In general a 2 stroke should not be hard to start BUT when they are a common problem is a wet or oil fouled spark plug. Have a spare plug ready to swap out in case. Use better 2 stroke oil that is mixed at a leaner ratio also to avoid oil fouling.
I am attempting to bring a 1986 Polaris ATV back to life. Ive worked with 4 stroke go kart engines lots and done basic maintenance with 2 stroke stuff - but not too deep in the 2 stroke engines. So so its hard to pull the starter rope and it sort of jumps around.
Not impossible but doesnt feel like it should be so hard and unsmooth. This isnt a hot 4 stroke were are talking about here 2 stroke engines are very easy to start hot or cold and hard starting is a sign that something is not right in your engine. All that kicking or pulling is just wearing out your starter and probably your leg or arm in the process.
Recently my two 2-stroke blowers Echo PB-250LN and Hitachi RB24EAP have been requiring very high effort to pull the starter cords. They feel like super high compression large 4-strokes where I can clearly feel every compression stroke as I pull the cord. Once started they both run fine revving quickly and running cleanly at full throttle.
What happens when initially starting a 2 stroke with leaking rings is when the piston is going up it creates a low in the crankcase drawing air and fuel into it. If the rings arent sealing or the crank seals are worn or a leaking barrel gasket or the crankase itself not all of the mixture in the crankcase that will end up being burnt in the cylinder has come from the carburettor meaning a weak. If it feels like there is something dragging then it could be that you are pressing down too hard on the motor when trying to start.
The blower housing is really flimsy on those and it is easy to push hard enough on the top of the engine when starting making the impeller rub the housing. If the engine has sat for a good bit the first thing I would do if its difficult to pull is remove the spark plug and ease the compression until I was able to get oil to start lubricating the cylinder again. This could be a case of the cylinder isnt lubricated due to sitting for a long time.
Monte Was this answer helpful. Yes No Score 4. Usually when an engine kicks back that hard it is because the valves are out of adjustment.
The engine has a compression release that aids in starting the engine. If the valves are out of adjustment the compression release does not work and will jerk you hand back. I have posted a few images below.
Just click on the images to enlarge them. I have a kohler 14 command on a 36 bunton that is hard to pull. You literally have to pull slowly until you find compression stroke and get passed it before you pull hard to start.
Otherwise it will tear the heck out of your shoulder. I know this is not normal. I was told to put 10w 30 in instead of sae 30 being that it will reduce the resistance.
The machine appears to be in good condition and starts and runs fine on a few pulls. The problem is that the pull cord is VERY hard to pull. I have to hold the shaft down with my foot in order to keep the engine from coming off the ground while trying.
Not familiar with this engine. Take it apart and see. Something is causing the locking.
If you dont want to take it apart you could try pulling the plug and flushing kerosine through the piston cylinder and pulling the start chord a bunch of times trying to looses what ever is causing the lock. Then drain everything out. Straight from the horses mouth one of MowDirects experienced engineers shares his secret starting tip for two-stroke engines that are proving difficult.
He has used a chainsaw engine as an example but the basic technique should be interchangeable. Put your Chainsaw on to choke Step 2. If the Chainsaw has a primer give it 5 pumps.
I have a hard time starting my 1999 Merc 2-stroke 25HP and cant figure it out. It takes anywhere from 15-25 pulls on the starter rope to get going but from then on it starts on the first pull the rest of the day. Heres the history of the engine and maintenance to help narrow things down.
Many 2-cycle engines have problems and are sent to the junk yard before their time. Typical problems include hard starting rough running a need to adjust the carburetor during use to keep the engine from stalling a need to rev the engine to keep it from dying and not starting at all. Roger shows you how to start your two-stroke engine the right way on your chainsaw cut off saw strimmer or leaf blower.
The problem is the engine will pull through a compression stroke in normal starting without any difficulty. The compression release makes for easier starting with the ignition in place and in rethinking this even if the compression release is disabled with the plug wire off you should be able to pull through that stroke without any problem. Could be dealing with a seized engine or simply a jammed or faulty pull-start mechanism.
You will need to do some more diagnosis and report back so people can give you informed suggestions. Maybe pull the spark plug out and see if that makes any difference and. Go to step 2.
If No flooded engine is found. Try giving a quick squirt of starting fluid at the air cleaner opening. If engine still does not start go to step 10 10.
Make sure it is moving slide valve up and down in carb. Still no start then go to step. Why does the mower engine kickback when starting.
The lawnmower engine kicks back because the blade has hit something solid which caused the engine to come to a sudden stop and in turn breaking the flywheel key. Pull cord snapping back. Broken pull cord handle.
Loose damaged blade. Get shopping advice from experts friends and the community. I own three other 2 cycle tools and all of the pull cords follow through smoothly when the engine fires.
My Ryobi 700r string trimmer wants to stop dead as it fires. This puts extreme pressure on my fingers as Im pulling my hardest in one direction and the engine wants to pull me in the other direction. When you absolutely have to start a two strokeyou can do two things that singly will almost always start an engine but together can save your butt.
Turn off the choke disconnect the gas hose and pull the rope a few times. Now their is a mechanical safety that keeps you from starting the engine in. Dec 20 2009.
Yamaha 25 HP 2-stroke hard starting. The starting procedure in the owners manual is. Put throttle to start.
Pull out choke fully. Pull starter cord repeatedly till it starts. If no start in 4 or 5 tries increase throttle.
Turn off choke when it starts.
