Four blades have some features of their own though. Just noticed you have 2 counter rotation engines.
Four blades have some features of their own though.
3 or 4 blade prop. Three Blade vs 4 Blade Propellers and Load Carrying. Due to the greater increased blade area of the 4 blade propellers and the increased grip on the water that this provides a 4 blade propeller will often perform better than 3 blade propellers when carrying heavy loads or. Three-blade props offer a nice compromise when it comes acceleration efficiency lift and speed.
A four-blade propeller on the other hand can boost acceleration efficiency or lift but at the cost of a lower top speed. Jim Hendricks Sport Fishing. The difference between a 3-blade prop vs a 4-blade prop is that the 3-blade smaller blade ratio is faster with a higher top speed and the 4-blade higher blade ratio has a better hole-shot acceleration and better stern lift as well as better handling and fuel economy because it will keep you on plane at.
The short answer is the 4 blade propeller has more surface area and bite which allows a boat to get up on a plane and maintain it easier at a lower RPM. However the 3 blade prop has less surface area which offers less drag and more top speed than the 4 blade prop. 3 Blade Prop vs 4.
Over the past many years boaters have debated the question of 4-blade propellers versus 3-blade propellers. The uninformed argument is that 4-blades are slow and 3-blades are fast end of discussion. Today new trends in the marine marketplace and high marine fuel prices have brought new concerns to the boating world.
A 3 blade propeller usually offers top speed performance while a 4 blade propeller provides maximum thrust and smooth cruising operation. Four blades have some features of their own though. They often provide more lift at the stern which will help accelerate the hull especially if it is stern heavy.
Are stainless props worth the money. A 3 blade propeller usually offers top speed performance while a 4 blade propeller provides maximum thrust and smooth cruising operation. Four blades have some features of their own though.
They often provide more lift at the stern which will help accelerate the hull especially if it. A 3 blade propeller usually offers top speed performance while a 4 blade propeller provides maximum thrust and smooth cruising operation. Four blades have some features of their own though.

Really depends on your performance criteria or what problem your trying to fix. I went from an inexpensive 3 blade stainless to an OE 4 blade stainless then back to a performance 3. A 3 blade boat propeller is capable of handling boats which are up to 40 feet in length.
Benefits of 4 Blade Boat Propellers. The 4 blade propeller is a good all-round boat propeller. It offers decent acceleration good handling and a reasonable top speed.
A 4 blade propeller is slightly smaller than its 3 blade counterpart so that the same RPM can be achieved. 3 Blade vs 4 Blade Propellers Whats the Difference Between 3 and 4 Blade Outboard Props - YouTube. As you mentioned your trade off is at the higher end of the speed and RPM scale where a 3 blade prop will out perform a 4 blade prop.
You can expect to loose about 5 off the top speed with a 4 blade prop. Regardless of the number of blades you will want a prop that is well matched to the power and size of the boat in question. 3 blade props may provide better performance bow lift.
This depends on the props of course. What is the centerline distance between engine centers. 26 inches is the typical install.
What type and pitch are the current 4 blade props. And what is the wot rpm. What is the beam of your boat.
Just noticed you have 2 counter rotation engines. Posted June 4 2006. Some of the new 3 blade CNC props have blade area near or equal to that of a four blade.
If you are still running the CVP stainless that was OEM you owe it to yourself to get a CNC prop. By far the best thing I have done to my boat. 3 and 4 blade props.
1 - NIB APC 4 blade 11x9. 1 - NIB Graupner 3 blade 10x7. 1 - used Master Airscrew 3 blade 13x8.
2 - used APC 3 blade 134x135. The 3 blade props actually have more surface area than the 4 blade prop for better holeshot and are more efficient as well so the top end is better as well. I went from a 13x13 Federal prop to a 3 blade Acme 13x115 machined prop and gained substantial holeshot and picked up more speed on the top end as wellplus a slightly softer wake to cross.
Because most 5-blade options are small in diameter and the blades tend to be narrow the pitch selection is generally the same for a 5-blade as a 3-blade to run similar RPMS. Most calculators will calculate pitch for RPMS assuming for a 3 blade propeller. When switching from 3 to 4-blades generally a 1 pitch decrease is required.
A 4 blade will most always give a better holeshot but loses it at WOT A 3 blade will give you more top end but less hole shot unless you cup the tips The 14 number is the prop diameter and the 23 Is the pitch which means the boat will travel 23 for each revolution of the prop not taking in consideration of slip. One of the best places to start is with your propeller. Jon tries three different Mercury propellers on an outbo.
Looking for more performance from your boat. Ordered a 3 and 4 blade 60mm prop. Have not tried them in the water yet but on the bench the brass 3 blade Rivabo pushes out a lot more air than the Graupner 4 blade.

The 4 blade will definitely hold the water and be more responsive. Fuel mileage is usually a little better and you can usually run the motor a hole or so higher. The 3 blades I have run tend to offer more top speed seems to plane in about the same time.
To get the best of both worlds you really need to try them as much of a pain as that can be. The Mercury prop selector comes up with a 15 pitch in either 3 or 4 blade. I would consider a Solas Rubex prop in a 15 pitch to save about 50 over the Merc prop.
