GM never used butyl sealant so if yours is original it is a substance they called thiokol and the gasket is damn material they used to keep the thiokol from running out of the sealant area.
How to remove butyl caulk. Scrap up the surface tape with a putty knife. Pull the tape up slowly and get as much adhesive as you can while removing. Mix hot water with a squirt of liquid dish soap.
Soak a rag or cloth in the water and then set the cloth on the tape to saturate tape that becomes stuck and you cannot remove. This will help loosen the adhesive. Continue to lift up on the tape with the putty knife razor blade or scraper until all of the tape is loose so you can remove it.
There are a few methods for doing this. You can use a utility knife or putty knife slicing through the caulk and peeling it away. For multiple layers of caulk needle-nosed pliers might work best.
There are also specialized caulk removal tools designed to tear away caulk cleanly. In general we use our thumbs on smears rubbing like you would to remove excess contact cement. A little heat just enough to make it more pliable will help as well.

It is more like todays urethane although not quite as. If you want to remove the sealant from the lens use a ball of butyl sealant and just stick it on and then pull away quickly. Repeat a few times it will all come off clean.
I will definitely try that my headlights were sealed with that gray stuff and I mean theres so much of it I hope i can get most of it out. For best results remove all excess caulk before it cures. Wiping excess up with a finger may be second nature but butyl caulk will not wipe off skin easily leaving a sticky residue that will end up on the siding stone or anything else in the area. It is suitable when the surface will be reworked and for removing loose or crumbling caulk. A putty knife is recommended for rough joint surfaces although it provides a poor cutting action. Butyl rubber is one of the most durable sealing compounds on the market.
This particular type of caulk is intended for applications that require an especially strong bond. Butyl rubber is water-resistant and never actually cures or hardens completely making it an extremely flexible sealant. Run your clothing through a regular washing cycle in your washing machine with standard detergent.
If the clothing is white add bleach for extra washing power. New caulk stains or ones that have not completely dried may come off with a normal wash. The butyl tape is not tape for this application it comes in a pump can and is applied much like caulk in a caulking gun but can reach into much smaller recesses and is pumped into and behind the rubber channel edges both on the glass and body sides.
