Job I did with a 026 titex drill - 0005. However if you are producing many tapped holes thread forming taps should be considered.
Be careful also that drilling and tapping or other machining in the vicinity of the threaded holes does not cause local annealing which can result in a drastic loss of strength.
How to tap a hole in aluminum. In this video I have used a specific type of tap called a gun tap which allows me to make a s. Video tutorial on how to drill and tap threads into aluminum. Aluminum can be drilled at high speeds while still taking deep cuts.
In tapping the feed rate is specified by the pitch of the tap but typically will run as much as 70 faster than a cut thread tap in steel. Coolant Oddly keeping things cool is not the primary reason for applying coolant when machining aluminum. The main purpose is to wash chips out of the hole.
Turn the tap handle clockwise to thread the tap into the hole. Reverse the direction of the tap when you have difficulty turning the tap into the aluminum. Using the Handle that comes with my Tap Die set I inserted the tap and tighten it.
Now gently start the tap in the hole holding the tap as straight as possible. Slowly turn the tap clockwise for about a half turn then turn counter clockwise. Repeat this process until you are done.
Dont try to go to fast or try to cut to much at one time. Simples pound to a pinch the tap will fit through the bolt clearance hole if it wont -just MAKE it then put the case back on and use that to guide the tap. Screwmachine liked this post 11-14-2013 0719 PM 7.
Prior to drilling the hole you will eventually tap determine what size you need to drill for the bolt you are trying to screw in. Your hole will be smaller than the diameter of the bolt because the threads tapped will increase the diameter. Just curious of the folks who are roll-form tapping in aluminum are drilling to tap-drill size or if the holes are cored.
I work in aluminum diecasting and trying to tap cored holes in 380 aluminum alloy has not been what I would call entirely successful. Likely its the geometry of the cored hole they need to have draft coupled with the. Suggest you use the applied load to determine the strength you need in the joint then select a combination of alloy temper and thread which will do the job.
Be careful also that drilling and tapping or other machining in the vicinity of the threaded holes does not cause local annealing which can result in a drastic loss of strength. To tap a hole to a depth equal to 2 full thread diameters with a 14-20 spiral-point plug-chamfer tap for example a hole 1250 deep would be needed. This depth is the total of two 0250 tap diameters plus a chamfer length equal to five 0050 pitches plus the external center length of 0125 equal to half the taps major diameter plus a depth of 0375 equal to 1 12 tap diameters for chip.
Drilling a hole How to tap a hole. Now you are ready to tap your hole using a tap handle make sure your tap is secured inside and the tap is straight and perpendicular when entering the hole. Slowly turn the tap in a clockwise motion for a few turns while maintaining the tap in a straight position.
It is commonly known that the minimum recommended thread engagement to make a strong connection for a component with a tapped hole is approximately 1 times the nominal diameter in steel and 2 times the nominal diameter in aluminum. In many cases tapped hole in a softer material special alloys etc these values are not sufficient and the formulae to the right must be applied. Like if you want to tap a 14-20 hole in aluminum drill a 7 hole first then countersink it about 18 deep with a 14 bit.
Doing that also keeps the top surface flush once youve tapped it rather than having the top thread pucker out from the surface a little. I like using tap-magic for all my tapping in steel or aluminum. When using a machine tool to tap aluminum thread forming taps do provide a great argument but like most things in the shop it comes down to quality productivity and economics.
A prototype or small run may not warrant use of a thread forming tap. However if you are producing many tapped holes thread forming taps should be considered. Have you considered adding aluminium by enlarging the pinhole with a very small drill riveting a round aluminium plug in the drilled hole.
It will be a delicate job you would need a ball nosed punch a light hammer. The plug will expand fill up the space you have drilled seal both ends of the hole. It has worked well for me on larger jobs.
Re-Thread the hole with a bigger screw dont force a bigger screw into a damaged site. Use a ReamingTap tool to increase the thread size to your desired size. Also in order to use the heli-coil you will need to reamtap the hole.
If you have room around the holeDrill the hole bigger and take a piece of aluminum dowelbevel the hole as much as you can incert dowle weld around the dowel filling the bevel Then drill new hole taphelicoilThis would take away trying to reach to the bottom of the hole with weld Just an idea ive been thinking of tryingRR. Option 2 would be to use an aluminum filler rod and a MIG welder to fill then drill and tap the hole. ABCellars - 03032016 Reply Another option is to drill and tap a larger hole and drive a threaded rod into the hole grind both sides off flat then drill a hole into where the threads mesh and lock the two together with a locking pin then re-drill and tap a hole to match the original.
Posted 20 October 2015 - 0337 PM. 14-20 should be fine in 12 in. Keep the drill straight use a press if you canOR drill a 205in.
Hole in a 1 12in. Block and use it to guide the tap drill and another 14in. To guide the tap to hold them perpendicular to the part.
Aluminum It is softer than steel obviously. Use cutting oil and then Tap-Magic for aluminum. Why did the hole strip out.
Can the thermostat bracket be mounted using a larger bolt in the same hole location. Do you have enough depth for 2 complete threads threads. If depth is an issue you can use a bottoming tap to get another thread or two.
Posted April 7 2017. Under 18 diameter Titex drills easy - 001 on Aluminum. When you are doing hundreds of thousands of 2-56 and 0-80 way too much time lost reaming.
Job I did with a 026 titex drill - 0005. Every hole was checked.
