Lower unit oil smells rotten and is generally thick has a distinct Smellmotor oil would be blacker and would be normal as a little could easily blow by and end up in exhaustyour exhaust exits prop a little oil leaking out inside prop not a big deal. Oil leaks look big after spread out on floorcheck levels and change lower unit oil then keep an eye on it.

If you didnt run the motor in the water check the amount of oil in lower unit. Providing that the pressure test shows no leakage in the lower unit remove the gauge fill the lower unit with fresh oil and move on to the real cause of the black oil. Oil leak from prop - HELP PLEASE.
Reply 7 on. Jun 01 2010 1018 AM. Your lower unit gear oil drain screw and the top screw that shows when your lower unit is full of gear oil has neoprene washers.
And they can get brittle and allow water to get into your lower unit. The oil is leaking between the machined surfaces where the lower unit mates up with the mid section. And it is leaking from a hole at the under side of the anti-ventilation plate above the oil level plug.
The picture hyperlink above does appear to show lower-unit oil leaking. There are two seals in the lower unit–propeller shaft seal–upper drive shaft seal. I would guess that you have a bad seal at the upper drive shaft.
This will require the removal of the lower unit for service. Hi three things can cause excessive oil to run down inside the exhaust housing and out the prop if that is what you are seeing. First the oilfuel mixture is too rich-501 is what you want to use you do not mention what HP it is and if oil injected then different reasons can also led to excessive oil usage.

Relax because 9 times out of 10 what youre seeing is simply the residual lubricating oil running down out of the exhaust housing. 1981 75 hp Evinrude has some two stroke oil from the fuel oil mix dripping from the lower unit at the prop no fuel just oil. I checked the gearcase oil no signs of water in the gearcase and the gearcase was full so Im sure that the dripping oil is not from the gearcaseThe oil is much to thin to be gearcase oil.

Posted 05-16-2005 1027 AM ET US More than likely that is oil residue from the exhaust and not the seal leaking. Pull the prop off and thrust washer if your motor has one and visually inspect the seal. If there is no fishing line around it.
To confirm you problem you should pressure test and vacuum test the lower unit for seal leakage. If you are not equiped to do so let your local tech person give it a go. Fishing line it the 1 cause of seal failure if that helps you narrow things down a little.
Milky lower unit oil means you have water in the oil which means youve lost a seal somewhere. The first place to look is the output seals which are found behind the propeller. Theyre commonly damaged when fishing line gets wrapped around the prop shaft and the seal can be inspected by removing the prop.
Most Johnson Evinrude lower unit prop shaft seals are pulled out from the outside. This means that they will be easily pulled out by utilizing one of the two methods. The thing about these seals though.
Is that they have a thicker metal frame to them. So they are harder to bend with the screwdriver. But the drywall or screw method works really well.
The intake is the screen on the skeg aft of the prop. The hole with the oil leak is the weep hole that allows water to drain from the top plate of the gearcase. Unburnt oil will settle there off the inside of the exhaust housing then leak out for several days.
2 strokes are inefficient at low rpms and allow up to 40. After getting it off the oil seems to be coming from the exhaust so I cleaners it all out of the chamber flushed the lower unit replaced all seals and gaskets put it all back together and still doing it. It only happens after running the boat and leaks for about a day then is done.
Its a older 74 evinrude 85 HP I mix the gas and oil very. So obviously oil was everywhere. I started it up and burned most the oil out of the motor ordered a jet for the carb to make it a 6hp and when I get it I plan to clean the carb fully.
Before I dissassembled the lower unit it was already leaking oil from the propeller and when running would bring oil to the top of a 5 gallon bucket of water. If you have run your motor at low rpm without load in cold weather it is completely normal that unburned black oil drips out of exhaust or drain holes in lower unit afterwards almost every two-stroke Ive had did that. I doubt its a problem.
If I accidentally got too much oil in the gas it would smoke but also dump some oil thru the exhaust. It typically will not hurt anything if that seal is leaking. But what can happen is once the boat is in the water at lower rpms exhaust gases have the potential to leak out of that area and get into the propeller and cause the propeller to slip and loose its bit in the water at low rpm.
