Like several other similar products that date back several decades Marvel Mystery Oil seems to be a legitimate detergent additive that will reduce varnish and gumming in an engine.

Use genuine power steering fluid not ATF. Both are types of hydraulic oil but genuine power steering fluid doesnt foam and maintains viscosity regardless of the tempurature and is the proper viscosity for this purpose. ATF is just what it says automatic transmission fluid.
Oh by the way if youre going to use the wrong stuff Crappy Tire. Years ago I discovered that Marvel Mystery Oil was absolutely the best tapping lubricant for aluminum. We used Tapmatic automatic reversing tapping machines in the shop and were able to cut perfect 12 inch threads at 1500 RPM when lubing the taps with Mystery Oil via spray mist oilers.
